Stadium Stompers Conquer the Iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground

Sunday, 4th June 2023 was a day to remember for the enthusiastic individuals who took part in the exhilarating Stadium Stomp challenge at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) with a seating capacity of over 100,000. The Affectionately known "Stadium Stompers," eagerly gathered at the MCG, ready to conquer the stadium's stairs and support worthy causes. The event offered four categories: the Full Course with 7,300 steps, the Short Course with 1,900 steps, the Junior Stomp with 1,900 steps, and the STOMP Unlimited category.

A Tribute to Tina Turner:

The day commenced with energy and excitement as participants arrived at the MCG bright and early. By 7 am, participants began entering the stadium, eager to embark on this unique adventure. A special tribute to the legendary Tina Turner awaited them, with the assistance of the incredible Steve Tabone from Active Beats. A group of SCA members and friends channeled their inner dancers and performed the iconic Nutbush on the stairs, capturing the routine in one slightly flawled take. Spotting the SCA Members:

Among the bustling crowd, it was a delight to spot fellow participants proudly wearing SCA tops. SCA members Alison Hill, Heather Watson ,Robert Ross, Jackson Bentley,Mikaela Bentley, Darren Goss, Peter Walsh and Maria Pia Piemontese stood out amidst the sea of climbers, fostering a sense of camaraderie and motivation throughout the event. A special mention to SCA’s Peter Walsh on an incredible feat of completing 6 climbs.

An Unforgettable Experience:

As the event is untimed, participants felt at ease to engaged in conversations and connected with one another. It also allowed participants to soak in the incredible surroundings of the MCG and the breathtaking views of Melbourne. Peering out of the windows at the top of the stands, the climbers were greeted with a mesmerising sight—a light fog covering the city, adding a touch of mystique to the entire experience.

Supporting Causes:

The event also served as a platform to raise funds for worthy causes. The two causes chosen by Stadium Stomp are the Black Dog Institute and The Emergency Services Foundation. Participants also had the opportunity to choose their own charity

The Black Dog Institute, a renowned Australian mental health research institute dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by mental illness. With a particular focus on mood disorders like depression and bipolar disorder, the institute conducts innovative research to better understand the causes and treatment of these conditions. Additionally, they develop evidence-based tools and programs aimed at preventing mental health issues and promoting positive mental well-being. The Black Dog Institute also works tirelessly to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness through education and awareness campaigns, ultimately striving for a society that values and supports mental health.

Emergency Services Foundation (ESF), an organisation that provides vital support to emergency service workers in Australia. These brave men and women often face high levels of stress, trauma, and burnout due to their challenging and demanding roles. ESF recognizes the unique mental health challenges faced by emergency service personnel and is committed to ensuring their well-being. They provide various services, including funding research projects, offering training and education programs, and providing grants for initiatives that promote mental health and resilience within the emergency services sector. By addressing the specific needs of these dedicated professionals, the Emergency Services Foundation plays a crucial role in safeguarding their mental health and overall well-being.

Both the Black Dog Institute and the Emergency Services Foundation are at the forefront of efforts to tackle mental health issues and provide support to those in need. Through their research, education, and advocacy efforts, they contribute significantly to reducing the impact of mental illness on individuals, families, and communities. Their dedication and commitment to improving mental health outcomes make them invaluable organisations in creating a more compassionate and understanding society.

They cheered on the participants, provided refreshing drinks at the water stations, and ensured the smooth setup and pack-up of the event. As the Stadium Stomp in Melbourne concluded, attention turns to upcoming events in other cities. Stompers can look forward to the Adelaide event on Sunday, 18th June, followed by Brisbane on Sunday, 16th July, and Sydney on Sunday, 20th August. The excitement and anticipation for these events is clearly noticeable through social media interaction. Participants eagerly await their chance to conquer new stadiums and create lasting memories.
